shizenya!

for lunch today, i went to shizenya, an organic brown rice sushi place downtown (vancouver) on hornby. what is especially awesome is they have a no-rice roll! to be a complete raw nerd, i brought some of my raw nori and asked if they could use that for the 'organic greens roll' (avocado, mango, cucumber, bell pepper, sprouts, spring mix lettuce).
isn't it beautiful?
i'm hoping that maybe they'll start using the raw nori so they can have one completely raw and vegan item on their menu as, well, it's great having options! and this restaurant is really great. with lots of vegan options too! (nothing worse than only being able to order a kappa roll when going out for sushi with friends!) they just opened up about a year ago and they are doing the sushi thing RIGHT. and everyone i have brought here loves it!

korean middle school cafeteria winter-styles day 14

getting close to the end of my raw granola stuff. tomorrow is the last day of that! had it with almond milk, but of course, and the obligatory salad with *roasted* seaweed and brought the last of my homemade dehydrator ginger red onion flax crackers. by the time i got to breakfast this morning, one of the chefs was carting the oranges away! boo! they brought out persimmons right after which is great too of course. but it's exciting to switch up the fruit!
lunch... okay this was the envy of every eye that spied my tray. one of the chefs prepared some of my brown rice and then they had what i think are perilla leaves steamed up and salad that i put apple cider vinegar and hemp seeds on. i rolled up some brown rice with the greens and some salad and dehydrated lemon ginger pumpkin seeds inside raw nori.
oh yes! not perfect looking but oh so great!!!
tonight i got another bowl of the brown rice but i was too lazy to make sushi so i just had the nori broken up on top (doesn't mix as easily as the roasted stuff but it was still a welcome taste). the salad was topped with the vinegar and hemp seeds again.

korean middle school cafeteria winter-styles day 5

okay so getting off the raw train temporarily... there was tofu in the cafeteria again! and the roasted seaweed seemed like too great of an addition. i can't help but believe that me choosing any vegan options available in the cafeteria creates more of a demand for them! raw bagel with coconut oil though is crucial for my better breakfast!
look! my orange still has a leaf! YES! beauty.
lunch... i don't know how i got so lucky but the greens did not contain any "little fish" OR "little little fish". AMAZING. i broke up some of my raw nori from home for the salad and eek! a banana for dessert! LOVES IT.
and okay, dinner? more vegan options? the broccoli was steamed and then chilled but whatever! it's broccoli!!! and then a warm no animal product potato strips thing was great for a switch. and later cucumber strips with sesame seeds were brought out. YES! i have never seen so many vegan options in this cafeteria in one day before. one of the chefs came up to me and said hello and my name so i can't help but feel like being so inquisitive about the food plays a role in what they produce for us!

korean middle school cafeteria day 16

i started off the day with organic wheat grass powder mixed into water in my travel mug. i have been missing the taste (and smell!!!) of wheatgrass and thought this may help. not really. but i feel it did give me a boost to get through the morning. it didn't taste anything like wheatgrass but how can you have that amazing fresh taste if it's not fresh? and often i felt like i was drinking dirt grits as it didn't totally mix but i just kept adding water and it was just like a cold tea.

breakfast's excitement was the oranges. hurrah!

for lunch, i finished up my raw nori sheets, rolling up the salad with some tamari and pumpkin seeds.

but i ended up cutting them for easier eating. it was a nice lunch!

for dinner, i finished up my sundried tomato pesto on top of the salad with nutritional yeast. quite nice as well!

korean middle school cafeteria day 12

apples at breakfast... it's a good thing...

and the very last of my kelp noodles! i had them marinating in apple cider vinegar and some tamari i think, last night... oh yah, and wrapped in raw nori! the little bit of extra time is totally worth the perfect bites!

and nori again... but this time with salad and hemp hearts to be rolled up in it... next time i may try the remainder of my pesto in some... ooh and hurrah for plums!

korean middle school cafeteria day 9

breakfast... usual...

lunch... the last of my flax crackers :( sadness!

dinner... in effort to make things more interesting, i finally brought out my raw nori sheets.

it was really hard to make anything resembling sushi with what i had but i did my best. and then it was so glorious, i wanted to make more! but then the cafeteria was out of salad???? so sad! i think i'm going to try some with kelp noodles next!
